To talk about the benefits of breastfeeding, let’s identify what some of the draw backs are.
The Baby- The mortality and morbidity rates are higher among babies that have not been breastfed. They have higher risks of respiratory infections, obesity, asthma, wheezing, childhood cancer and they tend to have lower IQ’s.
Mothers- Mothers who do not breast feed are more likely to suffer from ovarian and breast cancer and Type 2 diabetes. There are diffficulties in preparing artificial feeds, and in cleaning the utensils. It is more expensive to formula feed.
The Health System- The burden on health care systems is financial. More dollars have to be spent on disease control, cure and treatment of diseases related to artificial feeding. More time off sick by mothers.
