Benefits Of Breastfeeding

To talk about the benefits of breastfeeding, let’s identify what some of the draw backs are.
The Baby- The mortality and morbidity rates are higher among babies that have not been breastfed. They have higher risks of respiratory infections, obesity, asthma, wheezing, childhood cancer and they tend to have lower IQ’s.
Mothers- Mothers who do not breast feed are more likely to suffer from ovarian and breast cancer and Type 2 diabetes. There are diffficulties in preparing artificial feeds, and in cleaning the utensils. It is more expensive to formula feed.
The Health System- The burden on health care systems is financial. More dollars have to be spent on disease control, cure and treatment of diseases related to artificial feeding. More time off sick by mothers.

This year ( 2008), the theme of World Breastfeeding Week is ‘Mother Support:Going For The Gold.’ It calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding:
- Breastfeeding exclusively for six months.
- Complementary foods with breastfeeding for up to two years.
The types of support a woman can receive are represented by 6 circles. All circles overlap, interact and strengthen each other. They are:
- Women
- Family & Social Network
- Health Care
- Government & Legislations
- Workplace & Employment
- Response to Crisis or Emergency
You can take action to support a woman planning to breast feed. Fit yourself into one of these circles and go for the gold.

World Breastfeeding Week will be celebrated on August 01-07
This is a WHO initiative. It is celebrated every year at the same time. The nutritious benefits are as old as breastfeeding itself.
The five gold rules to support breastfeeding identified by WABA are:
- Address each mother and baby situation as individul and unique; be sensitive to the needs of a breasfeeding mother.
- Listen emphatically to learn a mother’s concern refrain; refrain from talking except to ask questions for clarity; provide just enough information for her to make her own choices.
- Ensure that fathers and families are well informed so that they can support each woman in breastfeeding.
- Hold governments, workplaces and society responsible to create an environment in which every woman is fully enabled to have the choice to breastfeed and to act on her decsion.
- Believe that a mother can sucessfully breastfeed and tell her that. On the other hand, recognise when a mother needs more help than you can offer.
You can find more information on the WABA website.
