On November 10, 2008 bloggers around the world will unite.
Why? To support human rights for the millions of refugees.
I have joined the thousands of other bloggers to raise awareness. This blog is focusing on women and children.
During an emergency such as those in Iraq, The Congo, Georgia, Dakur and Afghanistan, refugees are especially vulnerable. Their healths are compromised due to lack of shelter, food and and water. In the early stages medical care is necessary for womens health, infant health including post natal care.
Without access to health care the risks of infant and neonatal deaths are increased. Sexually transmitted diseases go un-treated. Women miss out on post natal care so maternal mortality amd morbidity are high.
Report On The Congo- The emergency in the Democratic Republic of Congo led to thousands of women and children leaving their homes in the rural areas for Goma. Goma is a city in eastern Congo. In the meantime fighting by rebels forced women and chidren with few possession to leave Goma and take to the hills. They are running from General Nkunda and his Tutsi rebels. Since August about 200,000 have been displaced because of this fighting.
When the rebels advanced to the countryside aid operations were suspended adding to the crisis.
Report On Dafur- In 2008 more than 230,000 have fled from violence from this war torn city of Dakur. The conflict began in 2003 with an uprising against the government of Sudan. The conflict displaced almost 2 million people to live in camps inside sudan. Another 250,000 took to refugees camps around the border in Chad. Seventy percent of the refugees were women and children.
On August 31, 2008 The sudanese troops raided one of the largest refugee camps in western Sudan. 17 women and children were killed and many more wounded.
Report on Georgia- The International Rescue Committee is accepting doantions to assist victims in Georgia. They joined forces with a Russian group to assist refugee children with psychologcal support. The chidren have been eye witnesses to bombings and fightings. They are expected to received professional therapy to overcome the trauma caused by the crisis.
They have set up funds with local organizations to help school age children. The funds wil cover things such as food, clothes, personal care items and transportation. Donate
