September 28, 2008 is World Rabies Day. It is the second annual event for rabies.   This day should be especially important to you if you work with animals such as at veterinary or if you own pets.

Rabies is a preventable but untreatable disease.  This year the objective of World Rabies Day is to raise public awareness of rabies. Focusing on prevention and control.

The 55, 000 deaths annually from rabies are mostly from Africa and Asia.  Dogs are the source of  contact.

The source of the known cases in North America is bats.

How to prevent rabies?

  • Vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies.
  • If you are bitten, wash the wound thorughly and see a health professional
  • If your pet is bitten, take to a veterinary; leave alone.
  • Avoid stray dogs and cats.
  • Keep your pets on a leash
  • If you are travelling to an endemic country, get immunized.

The key to prevention is immunization and good wound management.

The high risks groups are those travelling to endemic countries  and students entering veterinary school.  For these individuals pre-exposure immunisation is paramount.
